Tom
Da Silva has a unique style and sound. A house
DJ, but a firm believer in “the huge
diversity that exists within four/four beat based music”. Sydney
based, Tom is rarely stuck for words or lacking in enthusiasm. Tom
happily accepts being referred to as a Party-People’s
DJ, his love of music and energy comes
across in his work.
Originally from Brighton in England, the birthplace of many music
styles and new scenes, Tom grew up partying and playing alongside
Brighton’s Skint/Big-Beat pioneers. His first musical calling was
hip-hop and he fell in love with electronic music at a young age.
Tom’s sounds range from soulful, funky house to tougher uplifting,
driving, tribal house grooves. Whether it’s playing a mellow
backdrop to a bar audience or rocking a peak-time main room you will
always see a smile on Tom’s face. Tom is a big fan of vocals, not
afraid to splice up accapella’s and create something new but
familiar for his audiences.
Tom’s DJ career of 8 years has in many
ways been a joint venture with his very good friend of 10 years,
Terence Moreno. Together as Tom n Terri, the pair have made a name
for themselves with their fun attitude to their work. Together they
have won over crowds in their home-town of 8 years, London, as well
as playing other major UK clubbing cities Birmingham and Leeds.
Internationally the pair played together in Stockholm, New York,
Ibiza, Mallorca and Munich.
Tom’s showmanship comes from years of playing dressy, alternative,
mixed-gay clubs, and the flamboyant fashion-conscious London party
circuit, where “you have to be a bit outrageous to get noticed!”.
Tom was also a regular on the London Sunday scene.
Over the years Tom has had the pleasure of supporting NY house
legends Kenny Carpenter and Burt Bevans at Qaraj in London, Cricco
Castelli and Hed Kandi DJ’s at Lousch also in London, playing
alongside Eric Prydz at Stockholm’s uber-cool Sture Compagniet, In
Sydney he has played clubs, big and small, featuring on the bill
with Cassius, X-Press-2, Bob Sinclar, DJ Falcon, ATFC, Mark Moore
and Princess Julia on their Australian visits.
The here and now: Tom is a regular on the Sydney circuit, and has
also been enjoying the reaction to his style and sound on his
interstate outings. You can see Tom spinning at Kink, Lookin Good,
SHE, Moulin Nights and DTPM, well I never!

Here's a TFW exclusive interview with Tom Da
Silva on 12th April
How did you start DJing? When did
you start? |
I was buying vinyl, mainly hip hop,
from when I was 13. It was just cool. Peer pressure and all
that. By the time I got my first decks at 17, I already had a
respectable record collection. And that was over 11 years ago. |
How did you get your first gig and
where was it? |
In Brighton in the UK, me and mates
used to put on our own hip-hop/funk nights at little venues who
obviously didn't care about their blatantly underage clientele,
promoters and DJ's. |
What makes a good DJ? |
An obsessive sometimes unhealthy
love of music, and
its also about taking it seriously without taking it too
seriously! |
What makes you a good DJ? |
You'd really have to ask someone
that's heard me for an objective answer to that. |
Who inspires you in the local
industry and why? |
There's way to many too mention.
Everyone on the Sydney circuit adds something special and
unique. Its one of the friendliest scenes I've known. |
Who is the best DJ/artist in the
world and why? |
I'm fickle, it can change from one
month to the next, it depends what mood I'm in. |
What makes you different from other
DJs? |
Sometimes my music and the way i
play it.....the rest of the time my hair |
Why do you DJ? |
I love that shit! |
What is your DJing goal? |
Just keep loving that shit! |
What are your regular gigs at the
moment? |
Kink, Lookin Good,
DTPM,
S.H.E.,
HomeBar |
Do you have an Internet site /
Homepage? |
No, sorry. (Although I have a
profile on
www.thefunkyway.com ed!! lol) |
What is the best venue that you've
played at and what made it a good venue? |
Thats hard, the best nights are the
ones i can't rememeber the next day- if you know what i mean!
|
What is the worst DJing moment that
you've had? |
Stopping the wrong record- it
doesn't happen a lot but boy its painful. |
What is best venue you've been to
as a patron and what made it great? |
Too many to mention but up there
are Space and DC10 in Ibiza, Twilo in NY (now closed), The Cross
in London, Bonds in Birmingam, Mint in Leeds -its a combination
of the location, the actual venue, who was playing and how
"happy" i was feeling. |
How do you find new music? |
The WWW. |
What are your fave tracks at the
moment? (top 5) |
(no answer) |
What do you do when you're not
Djing? |
I spend the rest of my time in
expensive hair-salons improving the tightness of my perm and
striving for the perfect afro-mullet... |
What is the most important thing
that you've ever done? |
(no answer) |
What does 'funky' mean to you? |
Funky means it'll make you shake
your ass, whether you like it or not! |
|
